Pick Your Precious

P and I celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary last month.
My mother-in-law has recently completed a sugarcraft course and brought the most beautiful cupcakes for our Good Friday lunch.

These 2 facts may appear unrelated, but combined they gave me the topic for this month's Pick Your Precious (Sian's lovely monthly blog hop). I scheduled this post before I left for France, so I hope it goes live at the right time.
These dusty flowers, worthy of Miss Haversham are the fondant icing flowers from our wedding cake, which my Mother-in -Law made for us. They have spent the past 14 years on a shelf in my kitchen, but I think it is time for them to be tucked carefully away in my memory box now. So I thought I'd share them with you first.

The whole cake looked liked this, decorated with trailing ivy and a combination of edibble and real yellow roses.
We ate one tier and took one with us on our honeymoon to the Czech Republic, where we had a party with my friends from my time teaching there.

The top tier was cut and shared at a party to celebrate my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary in 2000. My granddad was very ill by this point, but he held out in order to see my grandmother receive her precious message from the Queen. He died a couple of months later.

For more 'Precious' memories, go over and see Sian at High in the Sky.

It has indeed arrived on time, never fear! And a lovely keepsake from a very special day. They still look so fresh!

..and you are all linked up now too, so everyone can come and admire the beautiful flowers. Haven't they kept well? They are lovely!

They've kept so well. How lovely that the cake was shared around to so many happy celebrations. I have a friend who went to teach in the CR and is still living there now!

Lovely, my 18th birthday flowers from the cake my Aunt made me lasted a similar length of time.

You had such a lovely wedding cake. I imagine the fondant flowers are very fragile now and packing them away may be the only way to save them.

Oh how pretty - I always think a combination of fresh and fondant flowers is so nice, some to keep and some to eat. Hope your holiday was good :)

I had no idea the flowers would last this long! What a beautiful photo from your wedding, and a lovely story.

I love that so many people got to share your happiness with a piece of your cake! Think about where you store them Kirsty. I packed a beautiful icing decoration carefully in a box and then put it in the attic. (easily assessable) I used to get it out to show various people but after many years of being ok, one summer the temperature changed so dramatically that my decoration 'melted' and went rotten!!

I can't believe something that fragile has held up for so long! Your wedding cake was definitely enjoyed for quite a few celebrations!

I'm late getting round, but so glad I stopped by! I love the story of your wedding cake and the places it went, and the bit about your dad was really touching. Thanks for sharing.
I still have the crystal cake topper from our wedding - maybe I'll share that next month.
