Saturday Roundup 16th Feb

Despite steadily falling snow on Monday and a flurry on Wednesday afternoon, it didn't settle, thank heavens and the rest of the week was cold and damp.

Due to the oddities of the calendar this year, several 'events' occurred this week: Monday was Chinese New Year, which didn't impact on us at all, but Pancake Day and Valentine's Day certainly did.

Shrove Tuesday meant Pancake races at International Club and pancakes for tea - 11 of them!

Wednesday was R's Valentine Disco at school, followed by Rainbows and karate.

Thursday was Valentine's Day. M took a card to school for her 'boyfriend'. I'm friendly ith his Mum so I'd made sure she would get one back - I know that I won't be able to engineer that kind of thing for very many years!

I cooked a Valentine's meal for Paul of our favourite confit de canard, which we actually ate at the table instead of in front of the TV.  It was nice to be able to have a proper conversation, mostly about the report I'd received from R's teacher at Parents' Consulation (much improved since the last one) and the shocking news that Oscar Pistorius (Blade Runner) had been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend.
Friday heralded the end of what's seemed to be a very short half term, and if you are reading this then it can be assumed that we survived the near miss of an asteroid as large as an Olympic swimming pool which raced past the Earth on Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200mi) - the closest ever predicted for an object of that size.

We have just got back from the Harry Potter studios. It was officially the kids' Christmas present, but P and I loved it as well. What a fab day!- the attention to detail in the props and the sets is just astounding. I throroughly recommend this as a day  trip. I only have two complaints: one was  the length of the queue for refreshments - the catering was not really sufficient for the number of visitors, and even if you take a picnic, there is only a small outside area to eat it. The other was that, although you were welcome to take photos in almost all areas,  the film lighting made photography somewhat challenging. Still, an hour on Photoshop will probably solve that. I took loads of pictures, which I'll share as soon as I've had time to sort them out.

Happy Half Term to all you teachers and parents in the UK. Hope you have a lovely week.

I don't think we have pancake day in the states, and I think that's a shame!
